Population

The Rocky Mount Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 111,463 in 1970 to 152,392 in 2010. That was an increase of 36.7 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 177 in 1970 to 6,000 in 2010. That was an increase of 3289.8 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.2 percent to 3.9 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 31.5 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the main factor adding population in the two most recent periods, and NDM had that role in the first period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the source of the most added population in the most recent period.
